People have always longed to find that fountain of youth and looks like it might come true because researchers have found a drug, now under clinical trials which could cause a major breakthrough in the field of medicine. The said drug targets the aging process and keeps us healthy in the long run. This senolytic drug has passed the animal trials and researchers from the Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota are hoping a big leap from animals to human clinical trials to ensure that it works the same on humans as they do on animals.

In a paper published in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society on Monday, the researchers outlined potential clinical trial scenarios. According to Dr. James Kirkland, director of the Kogod Center on Aging at the Mayo Clinic and lead author of the new paper, this is one of the most exciting fields in all of medicine and science at the moment.

The reason aging affects our organs, in the long run, is the senescent cells which are the damaged cells that resist dying and stay inside our body damaging our vital organs. The senolytic drugs have the potential of killing these troublesome senescent cells in our body without harming our normal healthy cells.

Senescent cells play a key role in being the causing factor of various chronic diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, cancer, dementia, arthritis, osteoporosis, blindness, etc. According to the researchers, senolytic drugs could be the possible answer to these age long issues.

From the 14 senolytic drugs that have been discovered, out of which 11 have been found out by Kirkland’s colleagues and collaborators. According to Dr. Kang Zhang, founding director of the Institute for Genomic Medicine at the University of California, San Diego, who was not involved in the new paper, senolytic drugs have a great future and if proven can reduce senescent cells and its effects and help rejuvenate organs and tissues.
